With it's total ticket sales reaching $6.2 million, the anti-Obama documentary, 2016: Obama's America, has managed to snag a spot on the box office top-10 list for this past weekend. The film is essentially a conservative look at what the state of America will be like if Obama is re-elected in the upcoming Presidential Election.
The documentary originally only opened at limited theater venues before expanding to 1,091 theaters across the nation and averaging about $5,717 per theater. Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented on the rarity of having a documentary reach the top 10 in the box office.
"It's extremely rare for a documentary to break into the top-10. August can be a land of opportunity for smaller films. Also, there's the fact that this is a very conservative film. Normally, it's Michael Moore-branded documentaries, the liberal documentaries that make all the money."
According to Dniesh D'Souza, who wrote the book titled The Roots of Obama's Rage, the documentary offers people new information about Obama and his policies that will have various effects on the country's future. The documentary is definitely aimed at painting a negative picture of the president.
"What's happening is that people are really hungry for new information about Obama. There there's a second sense that the American dream is in the balance, the American dream is at stake, and that gives people a sense of anxiety about where the country is going."
During a campaign stop earlier this month, President Obama commented on the Republicans' efforts to portray him in a negative way and blame him solely for the current unhealthy state of our economy while forgetting that it was George W. Bush, a Republican, who brought the country to its current state of economic instability in the first place.
"All they will say is that the economy is not as good as it should be and it's Obama's fault. They expect you to have amnesia and not remember who it is that got us into the mess."
